YES!! A new podcast!! I would have posted a comment about this sooner but I've been in Singapore (which, by the way, was fantastic). Joe, I LOVE hearing about everything going on at St. Paul's and upcoming events and stuff. Good work!! I'm a techie so podcasting is a primary source of news and info for me. Anyway, keep it up! Let's get some offiers on the show. : )

So what exactly would you consider the primary purpose for NFP? I don't consider it "contraception" per say because you are not introducing anything foreign into the body or process of having sex. But on the other hand I see NFP as a way of lessening the chances of having kids, and it that sense it is contraceptive in nature. Or maybe the primary goal of NFP is not to be aware of one's fertility?

All of this reminds me of the dream that Peter had when God showed him a well cooked pork meal and said, "Eat this!" Peter, being the 'well' informed Jew that he was said, "No way! That's unclean and I won't touch it." 'Course, that was the wrong answer because God makes all things holy.

The interesting thing about jobs and making decisions that COULD lose that job, is that it is not certain you will lose the job. You have to be careful to not get into a position where you are selling out your beliefs because of fear. Maybe you tell someone that they can get an abortion, but are you sinning if you setup the appointment for them because otherwise you would lose your job? It might mean a lot less pay or jobs few and far inbetween, but we are not here to just do what the world tells us. Having a good paying job, European vacation each summer, and sending kids off to college in new cars is not a necessity. People who raise families in Ethiopia are not doing it wrong, they are doing it differently. Maybe we should be challenged more by what most of the rest of the world has to go through, instead of what the Harvard graduates tells us is right.

I want to point out a few things. This idea of, well, we have three kids and now it is time to stop---because we can't aford to send four kids to college, or whatever, is looking at NFP all wrong. The point is to "be not afraid." If you come to a point where you are not open to more children, then you have do something wrong. What about a couple that is elderly? Abraham looked at his wife Sarah and figured she couldn't have children, no matter what God had just directed him to do. You have to trust that if you are trying to do God's will, then that is what will happen.

The other point I want to make is that NFP is not contraception. If it is being used for that purpose, then it is being taken advantage of. You have to Plan to Have a Family, Naturally. The Church offers as a guide two years between children, I think, but I haven't had the training yet.

The gift of your voices- riigghht.... :) jk.

Derek, you have no idea how much of a blessing that podcast was. Camp has been such a stress to me, and even though it's over, it was still stressing me out, but that podcast brings a lot of peace to it all. I prayed for you guys and the staff, and the campers, and it's a relief to hear it went well. What is so refreshing though, is that when you were talking about it, you were excited about when you brought your campers closer to God, and when you had the chance to tell them about God, and see them during adoration, and confession, and daily mass. It's kind of rare to hear counselors or staff talk about what seems like what should be the important things, and you totally just did, and it sounded amazing, and you and Joe put a lot of the hope I had lost in camp back into it. You reminded me of how it felt to be there, doing it for the right reasons and not dealing with all the other crap. Thank you. It really did bless me to hear you guys talk with such honesty and excitement about really ministering to the teens. It gives me hope that I'll be able to put the bitterness, and hopelessness I have toward the ministry programs and people behind me and be able to do what I used to love doing... loving the teens, and showing them how to get closer to God this year, as I get back into ministry.

First I want to say that I agree with putting all the options out there and letting people choose for themselves. That is free will and I think that's fundamental to what we believe. Second, you bring up an interesting point about other jobs which may not be Catholic like your example where you would be selling condoms. I know that being close to God comes in varrying degrees of difficulty for different people. While I would prefer people not use condoms, I would simply hope that they are able to change their ways sooner than later. However, since you mention it, I for example in my job I happend to be the cashier when I friend came up to by condoms, I can honestly say that I would have a very difficult time with that.
